Dr. Eric Bender, OD is a California Board licensed optometrist, certified to treat and manage diseases of the eye and to use therapeutic pharmacological agents. Studying at University of California, San Diego, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology. After receiving his degree Dr. Bender attended the Southern California College of Optometry and graduated with a Doctor of Optometry degree. He completed internships at the VA Outpatient Clinic of Los Angeles and at the Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton.
Practicing family and pediatric optometry, Dr. Bender provides comprehensive vision examinations and is trained to diagnose signs of ocular, neurological, and systemic health problems. Having managed over 10,000 LASIK, PRK and CK cases, Dr. Bender provides detailed consultation and post-operative refractive surgery care. Dr. Bender is certified to perform Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) for the nonsurgical correction of vision in children and in patients unable to undergo laser surgery.
Dr. Bender's interest in eye care and the visual system developed during his undergraduate education. His research in glaucoma at UC San Diego's Shiley Eye Center helped to develop new screening devices to earlier detect this leading cause of blindness. One of the visual field instruments his research contributed to, Frequency Doubling, is now being widely used in eye clinics around the world. Continuing his efforts in research, Dr. Bender conducted several studies at the Southern California College of Optometry concerning artificial tear preparations and their effect on contrast sensitivity. Two of these studies were accepted to be presented at the annual American Academy of Optometry convention.
